In modern work environments characterized by diverse team compositions that frequently span various organizational and structural boundaries\, it is crucial to understand the emergent structures that either foster or im pede innovation. This interaction\, especially prevalent in dynamic sector s\, involves teams that operate across both formal and informal organizati onal frameworks. Despite the significance of these dynamics\, current acad emic research only lightly touches upon how these emergent structures\, bo rn from the confluence of team dynamics and organizational frameworks\, se rve as catalysts or barriers to innovation.\n\nThis study employs ethnogra phic methodologies to delve into two distinct organizational settings\, us ing in-depth data collection methods including participant observations an d semi-structured interviews. The first case focuses on a tech startup whe re shifts to remote work influence managerial conflict resolution practice s. Over 18 months\, the study meticulously documents 52 conflict scenarios \, analyzing how changes in communication and decision-making processes im pact collaboration among teams with varying expertise. The findings highli ght that the shift to remote work can challenge managers' roles\, leading to increased formalization that may exacerbate conflicts and disrupt innov ation.\n\nThe second case involves a government agency\, applying an exten ded three-year ethnographic study to investigate 'Structural Elasticity'—a concept describing the adaptation of bureaucratic structures to foster in novation without compromising the stability of the original system. This s tudy explores the implementation of protocol scaffolds\, informal informat ion pipelines\, and neutral ownership practices that facilitate flexibilit y within rigid frameworks. The method includes participant observation\, i nterviews\, and document analysis\, capturing how these strategies enable innovation across departments with diverse objectives.\n\nThe culmination of this research involves a comparative analysis of studies examining how cross-occupational teams interact with various organizational structures t o influence innovation. This analysis will not only highlight differences and similarities between informal and formal settings but also offer insig hts into managing structural dynamics to optimize innovation across organi zational types. Through this comparison\, the research introduces 'Structu ral Serendipity\,' identifying and outlining its dimensions based on team- organization interactions. Subsequently\, the research categorizes differe nt types of 'Structural Serendipity\,' offering a framework for understand ing how organizations can strategically manage these dynamics to enhance t heir innovative capacities\, providing both theoretical insights and pract ical guidance.\n DTSTART:20240501T173000Z DTEND:20240501T193000Z SUMMARY:PhD Research Proposal Presentation: Hanieh Mohammadi URL:/desautels/channels/event/phd-research-proposal-pr esentation-hanieh-mohammadi-357044 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
