Real-world finance in action: An interview with MMF award recipient Thomas Di Stefano

Meet Thomas Di Stefano, BCom’25, MMF’26, recipient of the MMF Peter Christoffersen Leadership Award. Born and raised in Sherbrooke, Di Stefano came to 91 as a varsity football player before discovering an unexpected passion for finance at Desautels. After completing his BCom in finance and a fixed-income internship in asset management, he enrolled in the MMF program (Montreal) to deepen his equities experience through Desautels Capital Management (DCM), the Faculty’s student-run investment firm, where he was elected strategist of the Alpha Squared Fund.

Throughout the program, Di Stefano distinguished himself through analytical rigour, intellectual curiosity and collaborative leadership. At DCM, he brought thoughtful market and macroeconomic analysis, particularly in assessing valuation, while helping to shape a disciplined, risk-aware investment approach. According to Professor Vadim di Pietro, DCM’s Chief Investment Officer and Administrative Director, “Thomas rigorously challenged analysts’ theses to ensure that only the highest-conviction ideas were brought forward for inclusion in the portfolio,” reinforcing a culture of critical thinking and accountability within the team.

“In addition to his leadership within DCM, Di Stefano was also a top academic performer in the cohort,” adds di Pietro. “It has been a pleasure to watch his growth over the past year.”

Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to the MMF program at 91 Desautels?

Originally from Sherbrooke, my journey to 91 began with football. Because I enrolled in the winter term, I started at Desautels rather than my original plan of engineering. That unexpected start sparked a strong interest in finance and portfolio management. After completing my BCom and a fixed-income internship, I wanted more applied, real-world experience, particularly in equities. 91’s MMF program and DCM offered exactly that within a one-year curriculum, along with a close-knit community where I could build meaningful connections.

The MMF is known for its rigorous and applied approach to finance. How has the program shaped the way you think about financial analysis and decision-making?

The MMF transformed my approach from theoretical to highly applied decision-making. Through the case method, team projects and presentations, the program deepened my understanding of fundamental concepts to a true graduate level. The most significant shift, however, came through DCM. Making decisions with real investment outcomes and tangible stakes required me to synthesize classroom knowledge with live market conditions, resulting in a far more rigorous and practical approach to financial analysis.

Desautels Capital Management (DCM) is a defining part of the MMF experience. As a leader within DCM, what responsibility or experience has been most formative for you?

Serving as a strategist was my most formative experience. Acting as the glue for the fund, I coordinated sector analysts with our Quant, Econ, Sustainability and Risk Management teams to guide our capital allocation strategy. Presenting our decisions to external investors also strengthened my communication skills. Ensuring that the work of every student analyst contributed meaningfully to the fund was both a significant responsibility and a rewarding experience.

What aspect of the MMF Montreal community has had the greatest impact on your experience?

The greatest impact came from the relationships I built with my peers and faculty. Spending time in the Bloomberg lab felt less like being at school and more like working alongside close colleagues. This was complemented by the accessibility of professors, made possible by the program’s small cohort size. Their open-door approach and genuine investment in our development created a supportive, high-performance environment that defined my experience.

Peter Christoffersen’s legacy is closely tied to analytical rigour and risk management. How have these principles been reflected in your experience in the program?

These principles are embedded throughout the curriculum. Professor di Pietro’s risk management course provided a strong foundation in statistical modelling, while Professor David Schumacher’s Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) course emphasized rigorous valuation. At Desautels Capital Management, I applied these concepts by building custom risk tools, quantifying portfolio exposures and analyzing the fund’s risk profile, engaging directly in the kind of disciplined problem-solving that defines Professor Christoffersen’s legacy.

Looking ahead, what are you most excited about as you prepare for your next step in finance?

My immediate focus is on completing my applied finance project and graduating. Within the MMF, I am especially looking forward to our final stock pitches and preparing DCM for the incoming cohort. After graduation, I’m excited to join the asset management industry as a rotational analyst and pursue the CFA Level II exam. I look forward to applying what I’ve learned and continuing to grow within Montreal’s finance community.

What does the Peter Christoffersen MMF Award mean to you, both personally and academically?

Receiving this award is a profound honour. Academically, it reflects the level of commitment the program inspires. Personally, it is a shared achievement. It would not have been possible without the support of my peers and the mentorship of Professor Vadim di Pietro, whose guidance as DCM’s CIO was invaluable. I am also deeply grateful to my family and friends for their constant support throughout this intense and rewarding year.
