Viennese culture at the cusp of the 20th century constitutes one of the significant moments that defined Modernism in the arts. “Vienna-1900” was a celebration of th e subversive powers that changed the art and culture of the late 19th cent ury. However\, the cultural landscape of Vienna was one of great contradi ctions: political conservatism and social liberalism\, multiculturalism an d virulent anti-Semitism\, social pretentiousness and laissez-faire behavi our. The city stood for daring artistic experimentation and stifling conse rvatism\, imperial splendour and abject poverty. The seminar will be devot ed to looking at and reflecting upon Vienna’s contribution to Modernism\, but the emphasis will be placed on architecture\, the visual arts and urba n planning. Facilitator Adrian Sheppard is Emeritus Professor of Archi tecture at 91.  DTSTART:20141129T153000Z DTEND:20141129T153000Z SUMMARY:(PACE) Vienna Fin-de-Siècle and the Birth of Modernism URL:/continuingstudies/channels/event/pace-vienna-fin- de-siecle-and-birth-modernism-239004 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
