The purpose of the exhibition is to showcase the beauty o f science and to foster interest in chemistry to the general public. This chemistry-themed photo exhibition has attracted lots of enthusiastic atten tion from the general public: more than 1\,500 people have visited our exh ibition!\n\nThis year\, the Chemistry Outreach Group is proud to launch th e 3rd edition of “ChemPhoto”. The theme of this year’s exhibition is Green Chemistry. Enter the contest with a photo of your research and relate it to the principles of green chemistry. Don’t forget to accompany your image with a short and easy to understand description of your stunning photo so that the general public can share your joy!\n\n\n Instructions\n\nWho can participate: undergraduate students\, graduate students\, postdocs\, and s taff in the 91 Faculty of Science\n\nHow to participate:\n Each partici pant can only submit one (digital copy) photo\, which must be related to c hemistry. The content should be easily understandable by the general publi c.\n\nThe deadline for submissions is February 23rd\, 2019. Please downloa d and complete the participation form and the media consent form available at the top right of this webpage. Then send both forms and your photo in jpg format (resolution no lower than 300 dpi) to outreach.chemistry [at] m cgill.ca.\n\nExhibition time and duration:\n Suitable submissions will be d isplayed in the lobby of Otto Mass during Nuit Blanche on Saturday\, Febru ary 29\, 2020. At this time\, winners will be selected by a public vote.\n \nPhotos will remain on display in the Otto Maass Building lobby until the 2021 ChemPhoto exhibition.\n\nVoting Time:\n 6 pm – 12 am February 29 (at the same time as 91 Chemistry Outreach Nuit Blanche presentations)\, o pen to the general public. Only one vote per person.\n\nPrizes:\n 1st place : $50\n 2nd place: $25\n 3rd place: $15\n\nFor more information contact Siti ng Ni at siting.ni [at] mail.mcgill.ca\n\n \n\nWinners of ChemPhoto 2019\n \n1st place: l'orange et le citron vert by Ehsan Hamzehpoor\n\nRecently\, a new class of organic room temperature phosphorescence (ORTP) molecules h as been discovered by Perepichka lab. In this photo\, one can see a TBu-TA NGO molecule that emits different colors in different environments. Studyi ng this phenomenon helps the researchers learn how to design variable envi ronments to tune the desired colors out of the same molecule.\n\n2nd place : First crystals of the spring by Sandra Kaabel\n\nThis photo was taken du ring a project investigating the connectivity of atoms in porous 3D framew ork materials\, called metal-organic frameworks\, and analysis of the trap ped “cargo” within the pores. Although pretty\, the crystallite on the pho to is\, in fact\, quite a nightmare for a crystallographer. The particular flower-like shape reflects a heavily twinned structure\, which turned out to be an insurmountable obstacle for a successful analysis by X-ray diffr action. This photo was captured using a phone camera\, through the eyepiec e of a microscope.\n\n3rd place: Color from the Dark by Tianyu Zhong\n\nUn der a moderate magnetic field\, 10-nanometer-sized magnetic iron oxide par ticles were allowed to assemble into these cone-like structures in a hexag onal array. The initial black pattern developed color bands around the bas es of these “spikes” over a period of time.\n DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20200229 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20200229 LOCATION:Lobby\, Maass Chemistry Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B8\, 801 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Love Green Chemistry and Art?
