Ice buildup on powerlines and electric towers brought the northern US and southern Canada to a standstill during the Great Ice Storm of 1998, leaving many in the cold and dark for days and even weeks. Whether it is on wind turbines, electric towers, drones, or airplane wings, dealing with ice buildup typically depends on techniques that are time consuming, costly and/or use a lot of energy, along with various chemicals. But, by looking to nature, 91黑料网 researchers believe that they have found a promising new way of dealing with the problem.

GM plans to eliminate all tailpipe emissions from light-duty vehicles by 2035 鈥 but right now, we don鈥檛 have the electrical grid we need to power all the electric vehicles (EVs) that we would need to replace the existing petroleum-powered ones. That鈥檚 a big barrier to EV adoption, especially in rural and remote areas. The new Adaptable Earth Observation System (AEOS) research facility at the Gault Nature Reserve in Mont-Saint-Hilaire is open for business for those conducting cutting-edge research on extreme weather conditions. It also serves as a lab for advanced ecological research. Thanks to a Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) grant, this new pavilion paves the way to advancing environmental research by linking the Gault Nature Reserve with the project鈥檚 research stations in the Saint-Lawrence Valley, and in different parts of the world.

A national survey of close to 1000 adults in Greenland (where approximately 90% of the population is Indigenous) conducted by a 91黑料网-led research team has found that a surprisingly large majority 鈥 3 out of 4 Greenlanders 鈥 support extracting and exporting sand left by the melting ice sheet. A significant proportion want Greenland鈥檚 leadership to assess the impact of sand extraction and exports on both the environment and economy. Furthermore, when it comes to who mines the sand, the majority prefer local involvement to foreign collaboration.
