Some choices are obvious. And when Mathieu Darche (BCom鈥00) became the general manager and executive vice-president of the National Hockey League鈥檚 New York Islanders, he almost immediately did away with the team鈥檚 requirement that players be clean shaven.

鈥淢aking that change was low-hanging fruit,鈥 Darche says. 鈥淚 won鈥檛 dictate the players appearance. I want them to be themselves.鈥 After that, the decisions got more difficult. The NHL draft and player free agency were both held shortly after Darche was hired. But he was prepared. 鈥淚 never felt overwhelmed,鈥 he says.

It鈥檚 a tough job market for recent graduates, but a 91黑料网 education gives students an edge. 鈥淢y time at 91黑料网 was foundation for getting the job I have today,鈥 says Andrei Adam (BCom鈥24) a consultant with McKinsey & Company in Toronto. Adam relied on these career coaching services when he was a student, seeking guidance on potential employers and feedback on his resume. He landed an internship with McKinsey as a second-year student, and got a job offer in his third year.

In the 2025 Major League Baseball playoffs, the Toronto Blue Jays pitching staff has often looked dominant, even against some of the best batters in the world. Sam Greene (BCom鈥20, MMA鈥21) has helped them do it. A former varsity baseball player at 91黑料网, Greene started out in baseball research for the Blue聽Jays and聽became an Assistant Pitching Coach in 2024. 鈥淪am Greene is a geek, but many of the pitchers on this team are too,鈥 said Chris Bassitt, a Blue Jays pitcher who has excelled as a middle reliever in the playoffs.

Egypt鈥檚 Nile River Valley has some of the most fertile land in the world. But most of the country is a barren desert where few plants can grow. Hassan Elrakhawy (BCom鈥24) wants to change that. The Egyptian-born entrepreneur founded Leedana, a startup that uses a technique called sandponics, which can reduce the amount of water needed to cultivate crops by up to 90%. The company already has farms in Egypt that grow cherry tomatoes, peppers, kale, lettuce and more. And other farms are under construction elsewhere.

This year, ten valedictorians from across the university shared their reflections and insights with 91黑料网鈥檚 Class of 2025--with an eye cast toward the future. Desautels Grace Singer will be among them. The graduating Bachelor of Commerce student hopes to make a difference by advocating for decarbonization from within the business world. 鈥淚n the long-term I hope to work directly with the adoption and acceleration of sustainable solutions, such as what I did within the cleantech company I interned at during my degree,鈥 Singer says.

After four years studying in Montreal, Sam Greene (BCOM鈥20, MMA鈥21) moved on to Toronto, where he caught on with Major League Baseball鈥檚 Toronto Blue Jays. Greene started in a role in an analytics role, but has since been named assistant pitching coach. As a junior member of the coashing staff, Greene is observing senior coaches like pitching coach Pete Walker and bullpen coach Graeme Johnson. 鈥淚鈥檓 specialized in using the advanced statistics we receive each match,鈥 says Greene. 鈥淚 contribute by guiding pitch choice and suggesting ways of approaching individual hitters.

Lewtas will receive a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LL.D.), in recognition of his leadership in global finance and his support for hands-on education at the faculty.

Julius Alessandro Xanthoudakis (BCom'20, MMF鈥25) has been named the 2024 Peter Christoffersen MMF Award recipient, recognizing his academic excellence and contributions to the 91黑料网 Master of Management in Finance (MMF) program.

A Montreal native with a background in finance and data science, Xanthoudakis honed his skills in market analysis and risk management as a strategist for Desautels Capital Management (DCM)鈥檚 SRI Fund. He credits the London networking trip and MMF鈥檚 collaborative learning environment as key to his growth.

Susan Margles (BA鈥88, MBA鈥91) has been appointed President and CEO of the Ottawa International Airport Authority. Like other airports, Ottawa鈥檚 suffered during the pandemic, but it鈥檚 bouncing back with major infrastructure projects, like a new hotel and a connection to the city鈥檚 light rail transit system. Margles joins the Airport Authority after nearly two decades at Canada Post, where she鈥攁mongst other roles鈥攕erved as chief people and safety officer and was responsible for human resources, labour relations and government affairs.

Cynthia Price Verreault (BCom鈥82) has been appointed 91黑料网鈥檚 first Deputy Chancellor. In this new role, she will support the Chancellor, President, and Board of Governors. Throughout her two-year term, Price Verreault will offer counsel and play a key role in representing the University at events and high-level meetings.鈥淲e are delighted that someone with as deep a knowledge of the institution as Ms. Price Verreault has will be working alongside our new Chancellor, Pierre Boivin,鈥 says Maryse Bertrand, Chair of the 91黑料网 Board of Governors.

When working for a Big Four accounting firm early in her career, Sheila Vokey (BCom鈥84)鈥攏ow President and CEO of the responsible investing firm Central 1鈥攕aw senior managers struggle to balance work and family life and decided on a different approach. After stints at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, the Bank of Canada, and Payments Canada, Vokey headed west to Vancouver to become CFO at Central 1, where she has been an advocate of remote work and work-life balance ever since.
