The 91 Trumpet Ensemble, let by Professor Richard Stoelzel,has advanced to the semi finals of the National Trumpet Competition to be held in March 2017 in Denver,Colorado. In addition, Francis LaPorte and Brent Proseus have advanced to the semi finals of the National Trumpet Competition College Solo Division.

Rashaan Allwood, a student of ProfessorHans-Ola Ericsson,was awarded second prize at theWadden International Organ Competition in Denmark this past weekend. HIs award of75.000 Danish Krona is approximately $14,000 Canadian. “I am indeed very proud of Rashaan whoseshows exceptional hard work,talent, and determination," said Prof. Ericsson. "The organprogram at Schulichprovides talented organists and church musicianswith an opportunity to hone their artistry and skills."

In this piece, George Ensescu festival organizer Ilya Poletaev discusses his passion for the music of the composer and his motivations for organizing this first festival dedicated to his music with Schulich graduate student ChrisMaskell.

In the world of music, it’s an unfortunate reality that brilliant artists can go overlooked. Luckily, these same musicians are often championed by those who love their work, and in the case of the late Romanian composer George Enescu, his voice in Montreal is Schulich piano professor Ilya Poletaev.

Jazz musicians paid tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. with a concert based on his speeches and words. The concert at 91 used speeches by the civil rights leader as an auditory backdrop to the instrumental pieces.

Madeline Weber, student of Professor Marina Mdivaniis the recipient of the $4,000 Abner Martin Music Scholarship for 2016/17. A graduate of Elmira District Secondary School in 2014, she is in the second year of the piano performance program in the Schulich School of Music at 91.She has participated in Piano Tuesday recitals, Class Concerts, piano trio concerts and other public performances including a concert for 91’s Open House with the Concert Choir that she accompanies, under the direction of Jean-Sébastien Vallée.

Zi Hua Tan, a Doctoral composition student of Prof. John Rea has been named afinalist forthe 2017 Toru Takemitsu Composition Award. Out of 115 entries from 36 countries, Zi Hua Tan’s composition, …at the still point…was chosen to be among the four finalists of theToru Takemitsu Composition Award 2017.

The Prix Opus were established in 1996 to highlight the excellence and diversity of Québec's musical offering, and are awarded in many different categories. The Annual Schulich School of Music Chamber Music Competition took place Tuesday, December 6,in Tanna Schulich Hall. Two groups were declared winners and will travel to Europe for exchange visits to conservatories. The winner of theExchange visit to the Mozarteum, Salzburg was the Milton String Quartet, with membersRoman Fraser, violin,Maïthéna Girault, violin,Evan Robinson, viola andJoshua Morris, cello.

Last month, seven Rice University students traveled from Houston to Montréal to expand Rice’s Gateway Study of Leadership research programat 91. Much of the time spent at 91 was at the Schulich School of Music, where the students met with Interim Dean Julie Cumming, Prof. Simon Aldrich, Director of the Music Entrepreneurship Program, Doctoral student Suzu Enns and several other faculty members including Ichiro Fujinaga and Lloyd Whitesell.

Artist Diploma Piano StudentAlex Soloway has been announced as the winner of this year's Classical Concerto Competition. He is a student of Prof. Ilya Poletaev and was also a winner in 2014 of the 91 Chamber Music Competition as a member of the Aeolus Trio. Soloway has alreadyperformed in Canada, Europe, and the United States, including concerts at the Canadian Opera Company’s Four Seasons Centre in Toronto, the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall in New York.
