On May 25, 2017, more than 60 marketing academics in Canada gathered together for the 5th Empirical and Theoretical Symposium for Canadian Marketing Strategy at the Desautels Faculty of Management to present research ideas, provide feedback, and share commentaries. Through the conference, topics relevant to today鈥檚 changing markets, such as how news media portrays advertising and how firms conduct product recalls, were discussed.

A two-person team from Quebec has brought home first place at the annual Championnat de d茅bat francophone at the 脡cole Normale Superieure in Paris.

One of the team members is Desautels student Djavan Habel-Thurton (BCom'17), who was VP of the First Year Council 2014-2015, as well as President of the Jeux du Commerce 91黑料网 in 2016.

In a recent blog post, Cape Chamber of Commerce & Industry Executive Director Sid Peimer of South Africa asks just what a 鈥渟trategic plan鈥 is, pointing out that a strategy and a plan are two different things. Mr. Peimer contends that a strategy is what one needs in order to attain a goal, while a plan is the 鈥渉ow.鈥

He goes on to reflect on Desautels Professor Henry Mintzberg鈥檚 concept of a strategy as a five-part entity, with the plan being just the first phase.

Sustainable Canada Dialogues is a network of academics that was commissioned by Ottawa to come up with a green-energy transition plan for Canada.

The result is Re-energizing Canada: Pathways to a Low-Carbon Future. The report is product of efforts by 71 academics, including Desautels Professor .

Marie-Lou Dorval (EMBA鈥15) has done almost everything: She鈥檚 been a filmmaker, she鈥檚 been the president of an agricultural business, and she鈥檚 run a restaurant.

At the 7th Femmes Leaders conference on May 16th, women executives came together to discuss today鈥檚 constantly-changing business landscape and what it requires from them as leaders.

TD Investments Associate VP Francine Laurin (EMBA鈥11) says that 1970s-style managing has given way to a role more akin to a coach and mentor. Radio-Canada Director General, Communications Guylaine Bergeron (EMBA鈥13) adds that a more collective approach can help, giving the example that her team is about to abandon offices for more collaborative, open spaces.

Richard Garneau has long been an advocate for Canada鈥檚 forestry industry, and now the Resolute CEO is being recognized for it with the John Dobson Medal for Free Enterprise.

In the words of Michel Kelly-Gagnon, CEO of the Montreal Economic Institute that awards the medal every year, 鈥淲e look for individuals who are vocal in their defence of the free market,鈥 and concludes that 鈥淭his year鈥檚 winner is one hell of a fighter.鈥

Desautels Professor recently appeared on Global News to talk about the difference between introverts, extroverts, and ambiverts.

He chalked it up to 鈥淗ow much stimulation do you take before you get tired,鈥 and says that the three exist on a continuum, with the introvert taking the least amount of stimulation, while extroverts thrive on it 鈥 and the ambivert pulls strengths from both sides.

Every year, the 91黑料网-HEC Montr茅al EMBA program offers a $50,000 scholarship for aboriginal managers. The first recipient of the scholarship was Mi鈥檏maq urban councillor Manon Jeanotte in 2014. Her EMBA experience prompted her to make a successful run for chief of the Gespeng Mik鈥檓aq Nation in 2015.

Kativik School Board director Jason Annahatak will graduate from the EMBA next February, and calls the EMBA a good fit for aboriginal leaders because it gets them networking with a wide range of influencers.
