New Deal Brewing Co. co-owner Daleyne Guay (EMBA鈥2016) says that, over the past five years, microbews have risen to 8.9% of the Quebec market, while the majors have lost 1% per year and imports have taken up the space in-between. Within this context, Mr. Guay is on a mission to make you to reach for one of his Boldwin beers before you grab that next Stella Artois. New Deal has positioned itself as the province鈥檚 only 100% organic brewery, which also maximises sustainability throughout its production process.

France-Margaret B茅langer (EMBA鈥14) grew up in Matane, a world away from her current life as Chief Legal Officer at the Montreal Canadiens. She sat down with Desautels Associate Professor Karl Moore to talk about her journey from small-town Quebec to an English-language Cegep, then on to law school and a great job at a big-ticket law firm. On the way, she earned an MBA as a means of becoming a better business adviser.

Indeed, he doesn鈥檛 even look at it through the eyes of someone who grew up steeped in fashion. Mr. Amed started Business of Fashion as a personal blog while he was working as a management consultant with zero fashion training. Today, his London-based site is the go-to source for news-hungry glitterati.

In an interview on Fox Business Network, Aspire CEO and former MBA student聽Mohammed Ashour聽makes the case for eating bugs as a way to meet the world鈥檚 growing protein requirements. His company, the Aspire Group, runs a cricket farm in Texas and a palm weevil larvae operation in Ghana, both aimed at creating a sustainable insect-based food industry. Mr. Ashour says that both insects are 鈥渆xtremely nutritious, and have a high amount of protein, iron and other micro-nutrients; and utilize an extraordinarily low amount of resources to produce.鈥

West Vancouver-based PNG Gold has announced the appointment of Wesley Marstaller (BCom'05)聽as Executive Vice President of the corporation. Before coming on board at PNG Gold, Mr. Marstaller served in several capacities at the Macquarie Group, then as COO of the Rennie Group. PNG Gold CEO Greg Clarkes praises Mr. Marstaller, saying that his expertise will help with 鈥渂uilding the management group necessary to achieve the Company鈥檚 near and long term goals.鈥

PNG Gold is a mining company specialized in gold exploration in Papua New Guinea.聽

As the world鈥檚 population increases, the pressure to find an ecologically-feasible protein source is mounting, so former MBA student聽Mohammed Ashour聽of the Aspire Food Group is bringing a foreign concept to the US: eating insects. Long a staple protein source in many countries, bugs offer a bigger protein hit, and require fewer resources than traditional livestock does.

Monia Mazigh became a household name when her husband, Maher Arar, was detained and held without charge in the US, then deported to Syria in 2002. As Arar suffered in a Syrian cell, Mazigh鈥檚 persistent campaign to get him released not only brought Arar home, it also resulted in a Commission of Inquiry, which cleared him of wrongdoing 鈥 and it changed Mazigh鈥檚 life. She went on to run for the federal NDP in the next election, and has been working in civil liberties and as an author ever since.

In its 2016 financial results press release, Mississauga-based Profound Medical announced the appointment of Samira Sakhia (BCom鈥90, MBA鈥01) to its Board of Directors. SmartCEO magazine has named asset management firm Star Mountain Capital to its 2017 New York Future 50 awards list. Star Mountain founder and CEO Brett Hickey will be presented with the award at the Future 50 Gala on March 16. Mr. Hickey was previously President of Aegis Capital Group and an investment banker at Citigroup.

Star Mountain Capital is an up-and-coming lower middle-market asset manager. The Future 50 Awards showcase companies that are playing a notable role in the region鈥檚 economy and future.
