To mitigate the consequences of social inequalities on health\, family p hysicians should detect patients suffering from those social inequalities\ , and adjust their medical interventions. Therefore\, family physicians ne ed to know their patient social status\, and to recognize deprived patient s. However\, little is known about how family physicians perceive deprivat ion and its influence on handling care management. He is c urrently Head of the Health Care Evaluation Unit\, Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine\, at the University of Lausanne\, as well as Director of the Clinical Epidemiology Centre at the Hospices / CHUV. Bernard Burna nd is involved in several national and international R & D projects regard ing the methodological aspects of the development\, the evaluation and the implementation of appropriateness criteria\, clinical practice guidelines and evidence based health care approaches. He has also been involved in R & D activities dealing with the issues of over- and underuse of medical c are\, as well as with the development of quality of care indicators. Beyon d R & D activities\, Bernard Burnand is also involved in teaching activiti es (clinical epidemiology\, health services research\, evidence-based heal th care) and in service activities at the local\, national and internation al level.  For instance\, he is coordinating the efforts aimed at developi ng a Francophone Cochrane Network in the framework of the Cochrane Collabo ration.
