The countries of the south-western border of Europe\n(Spain\, Italy and Malta) have carried out actions meant to dissuade\nmigration in territories of origin\, transit and destination of\nmigratory flows. In th e last few years Spanish policy on\ncontrolling migration has transitioned away from a reactive and\nambivalent approach to an active one with a gro wing emphasis on\ncoercive dissuasion\, repressive dissuasion\, sophistica ted border\nidentification mechanisms and increased surveillance of border \nareas.\n \nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nAna María López-Sala\, Ph.D in Sociology\, M.A in Security\nStudies\, and Research Fellow at Institute of Economics\ , Geography\nand Demography\, Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSI C). Her\nresearch interests deals around comparative immigration policies\ ,\nirregular immigration\, immigration control and borders. She is the\nau thor of Immigrants and States: the political response to\nmigration (Anthr opos\, Barcelona\, 2005) and recently has\npublished (with Anguiano\, M) M igration and Borders (Icaria\nand CIDOB\, Barcelona\, 2010) and (with Mena ) Trafficking and\nSmuggling of Immigrants in Spain (Ministerio de Igualda d\,\n2011).\nShe is a member of LINET (Independent Network of Labor Migrat ion\nand Integration Experts\, IOM and EC) and was a Resident Rockefeller \nFellow at Bellagio (2010). Currently\, she is a member of 'Dos\nFrontera s' research project (in collaboration with Transborder\nInstitute\, San Di ego University)\, 'Transnational Immigrant\nOrganizations Network' (Prince ton University) and researcher in\ncharge of 'Is Spain moving toward new s olutions to manage\nmigration?
