Bilingua l children often vary in their\nrate of acquisition and in the proficiency level which they\nultimately attain. Considerable variability also exists in\nbilingual children’s language environment: this may differ\nsignifica ntly within and across children in terms of both quantity\nand quality. In this talk I evaluate the impact of a number of\n‘quantity-‐oriented’ and ‘quality-‐oriented’ exposure variables\n(following Paradis 2011 and Plac e and Hoff 2011\, a.o.) to determine\nWHAT aspects of bilingual children’s input may be relevant. \nThe ‘quantity- ‐oriented’ variables include lang uage at home\,\nlanguage at school\, cumulative length of exposure and chi ld’s\noutput\, and  the ‘quality-‐oriented’ are richness\, proportion\nof native  exposure\, no. of monolingual and variety of\nconversational part ners. I examine WHERE in the system\, i.e.\, which\nlinguistic domain\, in put effects are observed\, and whether ‘profile\neffects’\, as predicted b y Oller et al. (2007)\, are attested.\nFinally\, I consider WHY (quantitat ive and/or qualitative)\ndifferences in the input should affect bilingual language\ndevelopment\, exploring the constructivist and generative answer s to\nthis question by drawing on work by Gathercole (2007) and Yang\n(200 2\, 2007).\n DTSTART:20111202T203000Z DTEND:20111202T230000Z LOCATION:Leacock Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 2T7\, 855 rue Sherbroo ke Ouest SUMMARY:91 Linguistics Colloquia Series - Sharon Unsworth (Utrecht/Harv ard) URL:/channels/event/mcgill-linguistics-colloquia-serie s-sharon-unsworth-utrechtharvard-212543 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
