It is often thought\ntha t wh‐exclamatives like (1) involve a mechanism of degree\nintensification (here involving the gradable adjective 'nice'):\n(1) What a nice house!\nS uch theories need an additional mechanism to account for cases\nthat lack gradable material\, such as:\n(2) What a house!\nFor instance\, the theory of Rett (2011) accounts for (2) by\nallowing the covert insertion of meas ure relations at LF.\nSimilarly\, Zanuttini and Portner (2003) assume that the domain of\nquantification comes with a contextual ordering\, which ca n be used\nby the intensification mechanism. We point out that there is a kind\nof wh-exclamatives for which these approaches do not provide the\nex pected semantics and we put forward a distinctive and crucially\nmuch simp ler proposal: exclamatives directly express a\nnoteworthiness evaluation. For instance\, on our approach (2)\nconveys that the house referred to is considered noteworthy\, where\nnoteworthiness is defined as having intrins ic properties that\n'stand out'. Crucially\, our approach is simpler in th at we do not\nneed to assume covert measure relations\, nor contextual ord erings.\nA key motivation for our approach comes from our observation that \,\ncrosslinguistically\, wh‐exclamatives come in two kinds: (i) those\nwh ‐exclamatives that only involve an evaluation of the referent of\nthe wh‐p hrase (examples include English 'what (a)'‐exclamatives and\nDutch 'wat (e en)'‐exclamatives) and (ii) those wh‐exclamatives that\ninvolve the evalua tion of the open proposition (examples include\n'who'‐exclamatives in Dutc h\, German and Russian).\n DTSTART:20111201T203000Z DTEND:20111201T230000Z LOCATION:Rutherford Physics Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 2T8\, 3600 rue University SUMMARY:91 Linguistics Colloquia Series - Rick Nouwen (Utrecht/MIT) URL:/channels/event/mcgill-linguistics-colloquia-serie s-rick-nouwen-utrechtmit-212491 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
