Yet we often focus narrowly on\nthe production of food\, which can unintentionally undermine\nprovision of oth er key services.  The idea of managing for\necosystem services compels us to consider more than one service and\nobliges us to consider the interact ions and relationships among\necosystem services on the landscape. Yet we don’t know very much\nabout these interactions. Thus\, a key goal for scie nce in the\ncoming decade is to improve our understanding of how multiple \nservices are provided across agricultural landscapes. What affects\nthe relative proportions of services? Can trade-offs be reduced or\nsynergies strengthened? We are working with local communities in\nthe Vallée-du-Rich elieu MRC (Municipalité Régionale de Comté)\, a\n750 km2 regional governan ce body involving 13 towns southeast of\nMontréal to build models that the y can use to objectively quantify\nthe effect of today’s resource and land management decisions on the\ncurrent and future provision of multiple eco system services.\n DTSTART:20111208T230000Z DTEND:20111208T230000Z LOCATION:Redpath Museum\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0C4\, 859 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Cutting Edge Lectures in Science: Feeding the world without destroy ing the planet URL:/channels/event/cutting-edge-lectures-science-feed ing-world-without-destroying-planet-211545 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
