 is everywhere. It is part of the construct of our\nworld as we know it. In
 deed since its discovery in 1895\, our\nunderstanding of radiation as well
  as the nature of matter in\ngeneral has improved substantially. We have l
 earnt much about the\ninteractions of ionizing radiation with matter\, and
  as such have\nlearnt to better control and harness a small portion of the
  energy\ncarried by radiation. The applications of radiation are as wide a
 s\nthe myths surrounding it. In this lecture\, we will discuss what\nradia
 tion is\, and we will look at a brief history of radiation\, how\nit was d
 iscovered and what role it has played in our lives. The\napplications of r
 adiation in diagnostic radiology and radiation\noncology will be discussed
 \, and a brief cost-benefit analysis for\nmedical applications will be pre
 sented. Followed by\nSilkwood\, the 1983 film about the\nreal-life story o
 f Karen Silkwood\, a metallurgy worker at a\nplutonium processing plant.\n
