In particular\, I\nargue that agreement is best captured in terms of an\n operation. Crucially\, while invocation of this operation\nis obligatory\, its successful culmination is not enforced by the\ngrammar. Such a theory contrasts sharply with alternatives that\nenforce agreement through repre sentational devices such as\nun/interpretable features (Chomsky 2000\, 200 1). The\nargument is based primarily on data from so-called “omnivorous\na greement” contexts in the Mayan languages Kaqchikel and K’ichee’\,\nwith s upporting evidence from Basque\, Icelandic\, and Hebrew. I then\nshow how this conclusion leads to: (i) a\nreexamination of the relations between mo vement\, agreement\, and\ngrammaticality\; (ii) a particular understanding of\nwhat it means for a language to allow\, or not allow\, quirky\nsubjec ts\; and ultimately\, (iii) the\nconclusion that both agreement and morpho logical case must be part\nof the syntactic component proper (contra certa in recent proposals\nin the literature).\n DTSTART:20110128T203000Z DTEND:20110128T223000Z LOCATION:Education Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1Y2\, 3700 rue McTav ish SUMMARY:Mr. Omer Preminger will present - The Nature of Syntactic Computati on: Evidence from Agreement URL:/channels/event/mr-omer-preminger-will-present-nat ure-syntactic-computation-evidence-agreement-171174 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
