Finally\, zoo animal management\nhas become an ambitious ecological project that em phasizes\nconservation and requires sophisticated administrative mechanism s\nto coordinate between zoos.\nIn terms of surveillance\, this revolution ary shift can be\ncategorized as a transition from a low-level project of naming and\nrecording individual animals\, into a more expansive and centr alized\ndataveillance project for the global control of animal populations \,\nand\, finally\, into the domain of reproductive management. What were \npreviously technologies of naming\, identifying\, recording\, and\ntrack ing - and thereby scientifically knowing - captive animal\npopulations\, h ave thus evolved into a heightened control over the\nvery physicality of t hese animals.\nHumans\, in other words\, have transcended their biblically \nallotted role as namers to now become creators. Whereas animal\nhusbandr y has been around for centuries\, this essay contends that\nthe reproducti ve control of zoo animals is unique in several ways\,\nand\, perhaps most importantly\, in its framing as an ecological\nenterprise. The term 'zoove illance' is coined here to express this\nuniqueness.\nBased on a series of fifteen semi-structured\, in-depth\ninterviews conducted between May 2009 and November 2010 with\nprominent zoo professionals in North America\, Ir us Braverman\nexplores the relevancy and importance of applying the framew ork of\nsurveillance in the nonhuman context of zoo animals and explore\ns ome of the underlying interconnections between human\, domestic\,\nand cap tive animal surveillance projects.\n \n DTSTART:20101119T173000Z DTEND:20101119T173000Z LOCATION:Chancellor Day Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1W9\, 3644 rue Peel SUMMARY:Zooveillance: Controlling to Conserve URL:/channels/event/zooveillance-controlling-conserve- 169499 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
