One of the most disturbing developments\nhas been the rise of a cultural phenomenon known as ‘Islamophobia’\nacross th e Western world. An indirect result of Islamic\nfundamentalism\, Islamopho bia has been additionally fuelled by the\ntraditional Muslim belief in sel f-censorship...\, biased media\nopinion\, a general attitude of ignorance towards the Islamic faith\,\nand a lack of inter-faith dialogue. In my pre sentation\, I attempt\nto describe Islamic fundamentalism\, how this ideol ogy has led to\nIslamophobia\, and some ways how to put an end to this ter rible\nthing.\n\nMohsin was born in India and raised in Abu Dhabi\, United Arab\nEmirates. He graduated with a Bachelor’s of Technology degree in\nB iotechnology from VIT University\, India. Currently\, he is working\nas a graduate research student in Dr. Michael Ngadi’s Food\nEngineering Lab. Mu ch like most of the world’s youth\, Mohsin firmly\nbelieves that mankind w ill eventually get through its current\n‘violent and turbulent phase’ to f ind peace and live in harmony\nwith each other and the planet!\n\n\n\nItem 2: Seminar by Luan Pan\nIrrigation Water Use Efficiency\n\nIrrigation is very important in some certain area like Nebraska\, in\nthe midwest USA\, where precipitation is fairly low. For irrigation\nmanagement field elevat ion\, soil type and crop water needs are\ntaken into account. On-the-go so il sensing and wireless\ncommunication technology are used to monitor spat ial and temporal\nvariability information.\n\nLuan pan completed both her Bachelor Degree and Master Degree in\nElectronic Engineering in the China Agricultural University\n(Beijing\, China) and started her PhD study in Ag riculture and\nBiological Systems Engineering inthe University of Nebraska -Lincoln\n(Nebraska\, USA). She then transferred to the Bioresource\nEngin eering Department at 91. This is the second year of her\nPhD study.\n \n\n\nItem 3: Seminar by Harvinder Singh Syan\nLaugh without reason – Laug hter Yoga\nDay by day life is stressful due to competition and the race to do\nbetter than other. To eliminate stress a good remedy is to “Laugh\nWi thout Any Reason”. We’ve all heard the saying ‘laughter is the\nbest medic ine’ and\, like most of such sayings\, it has some truth in\nit. The posit ive effects of laughter extend to health benefits\nwhich can prevent serio us illness. This includes improvements to\nthe immune system achieved thro ugh increasing the number of\nimmunity cells and augmenting the antibodies to strengthen one’s\nability to cope with viruses and other organisms. La ughter is\nimportant for both mental and physical health. The yoga trend\n gaining popularity in the United States and Canada typically\ninvolves spe cific movements\, breathing strategies and mediation. In\nthis seminar we will discuss why and how to laugh without\nreason.\nHarvinder Syan is from India. He completed his BSc Agriculture\n(Hons.) at Punjab Agricultural U niversity\, Ludhiana\, India.\nHarvinder has four year experience as an Ag ronomist in India’s\nlargest corporate ITC\, in the field of potato seed p roduction. In\n2009\, Harvinder came to Canada as an immigrant. He is curr ently in\nhis first year as a Master’s student under the supervision of Dr .\nShiv Prasher and is working on ecotoxicity of GM canola and its\neffect s on soil microorganisms.\n\n\n\nItem 4: Seminar by Patricia de-la-Cueva-B ueno\nA Plastic Landscape\nThe driest spot in Europe\, the Almería provinc e in southeast Spain\,\nhas experienced a dramatic change in the past twen ty years years:\nthousands of hectares of greenhouses have popped up\, cov ering an\notherwise arid landscape. This agricultural boom has brought\nec onomic prosperity to the region\, which some call Europe's garden\,\nbut h as also created some problems...\n\nPatricia is an agricultural Engineer f rom Madrid Polytechnic\nUniversity (Spain)\, and after some years working on hydraulics in a\ncivil engineering job\, she is now enrolled in the Int egrated Water\nResources Management Master's program at 91.\n\n\n\nIte m 5: Seminar by Daniel Karran\nThe Energy Shock: The End of Cheap Oil\n\nT he world’s addiction to fossil fuels has never been more\nproblematic than it is today. A general consensus has been reached\nin the scientific comm unity that the combustion of fossil fuels is\ninfluencing climate change. However\, there are other aspects of\nfossil fuel consumption that are equ ally concerning. We are running\nout of the cheap oil that has allowed wes tern society to develop\ninto what it is today. The aim of this presentati on is to bring\nawareness to this potential problem\, and how different th e future\nmay look because of it.\n\nDan is from Calgary\, Alberta. He com pleted his BSc in environmental\nscience at Royal Roads University in Vict oria\, British Columbia.\nAfter a couple of years of work in the water res ources engineering\nfield in Calgary\, Dan has come to 91 as an MSc st udent in the\nIntegrated W\n DTSTART:20101104T140000Z DTEND:20101104T153000Z LOCATION:Raymond Building\, CA\, QC\, St Anne de Bellevue\, H9X 3V9\, 21111 Lakeshore Road SUMMARY:BIORESOURCE ENGINEERING SEMINAR URL:/channels/event/bioresource-engineering-seminar-16 9253 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
