 S OF GOING DUTCH\nLecture abstract: In GOING DUTCH Lisa Jardine\ntraced wi
 th a broad brush the way in which English and Dutch\ncultures were altered
  in the course of the seventeenth century\,\npreparing the ground for a se
 amless takeover of the English crown\nby William III in 1688-9. In her Cun
 dill lecture she will look at\nevents surrounding the 1688 invasion throug
 h a stronger lens\, and\nshow how the careers of the brothers Christiaan H
 uygens (the\ndistinguished scientist) and Constantijn Huygens (secretary t
 o\nWilliam III) were altered by it in important ways. She will argue\nthat
  we ought to consider the post-invasion rise of Sir Isaac\nNewton in a dif
 ferent light if we link it to his dealings with the\nHuygens brothers.\n\n
 Lisa Jardine CBE is Director of the Centre for\nEditing Lives and Letters 
 and Centenary Professor of Renaissance\nStudies at Queen Mary\, University
  of London. She is a Fellow of the\nRoyal Historical Society and an Honora
 ry Fellow of King's College\,\nCambridge and Jesus College\, Cambridge. Sh
 e holds honorary\ndoctorates from the University of St Andrews\, Sheffield
  Hallam\nUniversity and the Open University. She is a Trustee of the V&A\n
 Museum and was for five years a member of the Council of the Royal\nInstit
 ution. She is Patron of the National Council on Archives. For\nthe academi
 c year 2007-8 she was seconded to the Royal Society as\nAdvisor to its Col
 lections. In 2008 she became Chair of the Human\nFertilisation and Embryol
 ogy Authority\, the arms-length body that\nregulates assisted reproduction
  in the UK. She was the 2009 winner\nof the Cundill Prize.\n
