During his two-week\nreside ncy\, Downing will present a keynote talk on the topic of\n'Social Movemen t Media' on Thursday\, 28 October 2010\, at\n5:30 p.m. in Arts W215\, 853 Sherbrooke West\, Montreal.\nThis event is a collaboration between Media@M cGill and the AHCS\nSpeaker Series. The talk is free and open to the publi c.\nTransnational Dimensions of Social Movement\nMedia\nThe history of tra nsnational social movements is a long one\, and\nincludes international la bour solidarity\, the abolitionist\nmovement\, the anti-colonial movement\ , the anti-apartheid movement -\nbut also fascism. In recent times\, globa l social justice activism\,\nfeminism\, environmentalism\, peace activism\ , First Nations' rights\nhave added to the list - but so has India's Hindu tva movement\nactivism\, Falun Gong\, and a scatter of others. The present ation\nwill initially focus upon discussing what is meant by\n'transnation al'\, 'social movement' and 'social movement media.' The\nbulk of the pres entation will review and analyse the role of some\nwell-known and some per haps less well-known examples of\ntransnational social movement media and Internet use.\nJohn Downing is currently Visiting Professor in the Informa tion\nand Media Studies Department\, Aarhus University\, Denmark\, and wil l\nbe a Fulbright Visiting Professor at the universities of Helsinki\nand Tampere\, January-May 2011. He is Professor Emeritus and\nFounding Directo r of the Global\nMedia Research Center\, Southern Illinois University at\n Carbondale. He has also taught at the University of Texas at Austin\n(1990 -2003)\, and previously at Hunter College\, City University of\nNew York ( 1981-1990). His research interests include globalization\,\nculture and me dia\; alternative media and social movements\;\npolitical cinemas of the g lobal South\; social class\, racism and\nmedia.
