In\nad dition to controlling transport\, a growing body of literature has\nlead t o the conclusion that NPCs also interact with chromatin and\ncontribute to the regulation of gene expression.  The\nmechanistic basis for these inte ractions\, however\, remains\nunclear.  In recent studies\, we have uncove red genetic and\nphysical links between Nup170p\, a nucleoporin critical f or the\nassembly of NPCs\, and proteins functioning in chromatin remodelin g.\nOn the basis these and other observations to be discussed\, we\nhypoth esize that Nup170p functions as a key component in the\nformation of the N PC and as a platform for the recruitment of\nchromatin remodeling complexe s\, in particular the RSC (Remodels\nStructure of Chromatin) complex\, to sites of NPC formation. \nHere\, we predict these proteins function in NPC assembly and in the\nformation\, and/or maintenance\, of chromatin domain s in the vicinity\nof the NPC\, including those functioning in the transcr iptional\nrepression of subtelomeric genes.\n \n \nMakio\, T.\, L.
