Vincent (Centre for Northern S tudies /Centre\nd'Etudes Nordiques\, Université Laval)\nThe Canadian Arcti c contains a remarkably diverse variety of\naquatic ecosystem types includ ing permafrost thaw lakes\, large\nrivers discharging to the Arctic Ocean\ , lagoons and other coastal\necosystems\, and perennially ice-capped\, sol ar heated lakes. Our\nanalyses of the molecular microbiology of these wate rs have\nrevealed diverse communities in each of the three domains of\nmic robial life\, with implications for biogeography\, food web\nstructure and  biogeochemical processes including greenhouse\ngas fluxes. The Arctic is currently warming at twice the global\naverage\, and some of these aquati c ecosystems have begun to\nexperience step-like changes in their physical and ecological\nregimes. Our observations imply that global climate chang e will be\nincreasingly accompanied by discontinuous shifts in aquatic\nec osystem structure and function.\nSponsored and organized by 91ºÚÁÏÍø Univers ity since 2003 with the\nexpress purpose of fostering communication betwee n scientists in\ndifferent disciplines as well as between scientists and t he public\,\nthe Cutting Edge Lectures in Science are\nmade possible throu gh the generous support of Heather Munroe-Blum\n(91ºÚÁÏÍø Principal)\, Richa rd Levin (Dean of Medicine)\, Martin Grant\n(Dean of Science)\, Anthony Ma si (Provost) and Denis Thérien\n(Vice-Principal\, Research and Internation al Relations). Lectures\nare followed by a vin d'honneur reception. Free\, everyone\nwelcome.\n DTSTART:20100311T230000Z DTEND:20100311T230000Z LOCATION:Redpath Museum\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0C4\, 859 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Cutting Edge Lectures in Science URL:/channels/event/cutting-edge-lectures-science-1090 68 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
