DESCRIPTION:As part of the celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the
 \nfounding of the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital\, our\nBeat
 ty lecturer this year is Marc Tessier-Lavigne\, BSc’80.\nDr. Tessier-Lavig
 ne\, a world leader in the study of brain\ndevelopment and regeneration\, 
 is Executive Vice President\,\nResearch\, and Chief Scientific Officer at 
 biotechnology giant\nGenentech. He and his colleagues pioneered the identi
 fication of\nmolecules that direct the formation of connections among nerv
 e\ncells to establish circuits in the brain and spinal cord during\nembryo
 nic development. These mechanisms provide tools to assist\nregeneration of
  nerve connections following trauma\, including\nstroke and injuries to th
 e spinal cord. Dr. Tessier-Lavigne is the\nrecipient of numerous awards\, 
 including the Ameritec Prize for\ncontributions towards a cure for paralys
 is\, the Fondation Ibsen\nPrize in Neuronal Plasticity\, the Wakeman Award
  for regeneration\nresearch and the Reeve-Irvine Research Medal. He has be
 en elected\nto the National Academy of Sciences\, the Royal Society\, the
