The talk is intended to be\ninteractive and participants are invited to bring their questions\nand to be prepared for a dialogue!\nDr. Mark Ware\, a pain physician at the MUHC and\nassocia te medical Director of the MUHC Pain Clinic\, is a world\nauthority on the potential medical uses of cannabis. According to\nDr. Ware\, cannabinoids show promise as medications for a range of\nsymptoms associated with chro nic diseases such as HIV/AIDS\,\nmultiple sclerosis\, and chronic nerve in jury pain. 'Every month\,\nnew research is published from around the world suggesting that\ncannabinoids play a role in physiological processes like pain\,\nappetite\, inflammation and movement\,' he says. 'We now know the re\nis a system of cannabinoids in our bodies working all the time to\ncon trol these processes\, and this system may be an appropriate\ntarget for n ew therapies'. Dr. Ware's research program on cannabis\nextends across Can ada\, and is supported by Canadian and Quebec\nfunding agencies\, such as the CIHR and FRSQ. Dr. Ware's clinical\nresearch team at the MUHC consists of clinical research nurses\,\ncoordinators\, research assistants and sta tisticians\, who work to\nensure that these important clinical trials foll ow international\nethical and regulatory standards. Dr. Ware completed his medical\ntraining at the University of the West Indies in 1992\, and\ncon ducted graduate work in Jamaica and the UK at the London School\nof Hygien e and Tropical Medicine. In addition to his positions at\n91ºÚÁÏÍø Universit y and the MUHC\, Dr Ware is Scientific Director of\nthe Canadian Consortiu m for the Investigation of Cannabinoids which\npromotes research and educa tion on cannabinoids in clinical\npractice.
