Although some\neffort has been made in IR\nevaluation res earch to accommodate both the user-centric social\nscience paradigm of Int eractive Information\nRetrieval and the system-centric scientific experime ntal\nparadigm of IR\, as exemplified by\nthe Okapi and TREC experiments\, it has proven to be very\ndifficult to address let alone resolve the\nfun damental tensions between the two approaches. However more\nrecently the c oncept of\n`information interaction in context’ has emerged as a\npossible alternative approach or framework for\nbridging the gap between the tradi tional evaluation divide. In\nthis talk\, Professor Beaulieu will explore \nwhat is meant by context in IR evaluation and how the concept is\nbeginn ing to be\noperationalized in empirical studies. The discussion will draw \non examples of experimental designs\nand settings that are leading the w ay in taking account of the\nwider aspects of interaction\, cognition\,\nt asks and users in information retrieval and assess the\npotential for info rmation interaction in context\nto serve as a unifying paradigm for the ev aluation of\ninformation systems.\n \nEveryone welcome!\n DTSTART:20090407T160000Z DTEND:20090407T173000Z LOCATION:McLennan Library Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0C9\, 3459 ru e McTavish SUMMARY:Dr. Micheline Beaulieu Colloquium URL:/channels/event/dr-micheline-beaulieu-colloquium-1 05632 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
