DESCRIPTION:Very few will now dispute that global warming\, which is mainly
 \ncaused by the increase of greenhouse gases (GHG) such as CO2 and\nmethan
 e in the earth’s atmosphere\, is the result of human activity.\nBut human 
 activity is far from new. What is new is a certain type\nof human activity
  - that linked to industrial development. The\nquestion then arises: could
  intellectual property rights (IPRs) be\nthe cause of global warming? Afte
 r all\, the industrial revolution\nhas brought with it IPRs\, among the mo
 st relevant of which is\npatent law which encourages and protects new prod
 ucts and\nprocesses.\n\nThe seminar concentrates on how the existing inter
 national IP\ninstruments and EU law already provide safeguards to limit th
 e\nlevels of GHG in the atmosphere. It then envisages how intellectual\npr
 operty rights could be improved to further reduce the levels of\nGHG. The 
 solutions developed may also inspire other countries\,\nincluding the Cana
 da\, as they are based on international\ninstruments and universal argumen
 ts that can apply in any country.\nThe seminar focuses on patents but will
  also touch marginally on\ncopyright.\n\n\nDr Derclaye will speak in Engli
 sh but will answer questions in\neither French or English.\n
