It is one path that might lead t o a new gold standard\, but it is not the only way to get there\, and inde ed what one considers a 'gold standard' could change.\n\nAbout the speaker \n\nA former president of the American Society of International Law and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Institut de Droit Inter national\, José Enrique Alvarez has made substantial scholarly contributio ns to a wide range of subjects within international law\, including the la w-generating roles of international organizations\, the challenges facing international criminal tribunals\, and the international investment regime .\n\nAlvarez has been a special adviser on international law to the prosec utor of the International Criminal Court\, an attorney adviser with the Of fice of the Legal Adviser of the US Department of State\, and has taught a t Columbia\, the University of Michigan\, George Washington\, and Georgeto wn law schools. Alvarez is the co-editor-in-chief of the leading peer-revi ewed journal in the field\, the American Journal of International Law.
