Sonja Solomun Named a 2025 Bishop鈥檚 University Top 10 After 10 Award Recipient

The Max Bell School of Public Policy is proud to celebrate Sonja Solomun, Faculty Associate at the Max Bell School and Deputy Director of the Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy at 91黑料网, has been selected as one of Bishop鈥檚 University鈥檚 2025 Top 10 After 10 Award recipients, one of the university鈥檚 highest honours recognizing outstanding alumni achievement.

The Top 10 After 10 Award celebrates Bishop鈥檚 graduates who, within 10 to 25 years of earning their degree, have demonstrated exceptional personal and professional accomplishment, leadership within their communities, and values that reflect the spirit and excellence of a Bishop鈥檚 education.

About Sonja

Born in the former Yugoslavia and raised in Canada from the age of nine, Sonja has built a distinguished career at the intersection of technology and democracy. She obtained her B.A with an Honours in Sociology, and a double minor in English and Psychology from Bishop鈥檚 University in 2009. She went on to complete graduate studies at Queen鈥檚 University (M.A.) and 91黑料网, where her doctoral research focused on the governance of digital technologies and their social and environmental impacts.

Today, Sonja is an Assistant Research Professor at the Max Bell School of Public Policy and Deputy Director of the Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy at 91黑料网. Her work examines digital policy and the environmental implications of AI and digital platforms.

Sonja is a Fellow at the Center for Democracy & Technology in Washington, D.C and an Affiliate at Data & Society. In 2023, she was appointed as the only Canadian representative of the Observatory on Information and Democracy. She is a Scholar at the Climate Social Science Network at Brown University, and a founding member of the Platform Governance Research Network.

Sonja proudly helped shape Canada鈥檚 federal digital policy on platforms and AI. She has advised both Canadian and international governments on digital policy, AI and information integrity.

Her research has been featured in BBC News, MIT Technology Review, Vice, The Globe & Mail, CTV News, and elsewhere. Above all, Sonja鈥檚 most meaningful inspiration comes from her son, Luka, who fuels her commitment to building a more sustainable future.
