Jeffrey Kennedy and Jennifer Raso promoted to associate professor with tenure

Published: 8 July 2026

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Jeff Kennedy and Professor Jennifer Raso were promoted to the rank of associate professor with tenure. Their promotions were effective June 1, 2026 and June 1, 2025, respectively.

Professor Jeff Kennedy’s core research interests are in prison law and criminal law and theory, with a particular focus on the public and political dimensions of criminal justice. His work frequently examines the implications of democratic ideals for various issues, including judicial ethics, cruel and unusual punishment, victim participation, and the nature of public wrongs. In several jurisdictions, he has taught Criminal Law, Sentencing, Prison Law, Criminal Procedure, Legal Ethics, and Criminal Evidence. His teaching has been recognized through a variety of honours, including the John W. Durnford Award for Teaching Excellence (91, 2024), a President and Principal’s Prize and Education Excellence Award (QMUL, 2021), as well as being named as one of five national finalists for Oxford University Press’ Law Teacher of the Year (UK, 2022). He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

An award-winning socio-legal scholar, Professor Jennifer Raso is a leadership team member with the 91 Collaborative on AI and Society (McCAIS), and a co-convenor of the Global Data Law Interest Group (ICON-S). Her research investigates the relationship between discretion, data-driven technologies, and administrative law. She is particularly intrigued by how humans/non-humans collaborate and diverge as they produce institutional decisions, and the consequences for procedural fairness and substantive justice. She has explored these issues as the principal investigator on a SSHRC Insight Development Grant project, "Shifting Front Lines in the Digital Welfare State: Coding Canadian Social Assistance Laws," a FRQSC-funded study, "The Norms In Forms: The Challenges of Being ‘Heard’ by the Digital Welfare State,” and as an expert advisor on three international research projects examining digital government (two in the UK, one in Denmark/Norway). At 91, Professor Raso teaches a range of courses, including Regulating AI, Science Technology and the Law, Administrative Process, Law and Poverty, and Foundations of Law.

Please join us in congratulating them on this significant professional milestone!
