    Plan your Post-Academic Job Search with an IDP

    Moving away from an academic career often means exploring multiple potential career paths without a well-defined personal roadmap.Ìý
    Join this workshop with a Graduate Career Advisor to start envisioning what life after academia looks like and to start building a structured career exploration and job search goals for yourself. Ìý
    In thisÌýinteractive workshop,ÌýaÌýCaPS Grad Career Advisor will: Ìý

    • Provide starting points toÌýenvision,Ìýidentify,Ìýand researchÌýcareers outside ofÌýacademia.Ìý
    • Walk youÌýthrough theÌýkeyÌýsteps of aÌýnon-academicÌýjob searchÌýand the resources availableÌýto support each stage.Ìý
    • GuideÌýyou in choosing one step and turning it into a SMART goal you can use as a starting point for exploring, researching, or applying to non-academic jobs.Ìý

    We will be using tools and resources fromÌýmyPath's Individual Development Plan (IDP)Ìýworkbooks,Ìýwith a focus on career planning. This workshop counts towards theÌýIDP requirements for graduate studentsÌýset by Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.Ìý

Whether you're curious about industry jobs or actively applying for a full-time role post-graduation, this workshop shares tips toÌýoptimize your job search strategy.ÌýBring your questions about hiring processes, the non-academic job market, and job search.

      • Learn aboutÌýtypical hiring processesÌýand job search strategies for industry and non-academic jobs
      • TroubleshootÌýcommon job search hurdlesÌý(e.g., searching for job postings, sending CVs and hearing nothing back, screening interviews)

      "Selling" yourself in interviews is a skill that doesn't come naturally to most people. Like many skills, however, you can hone it with practice!

      If you are looking to transfer your skills to a career outside of academia, join this interactive workshop to practice communicating your value as a skilled professional.

      Working together through interactive scenarios, we will:

      • Identify transferrable skills employers want (e.g., problem-solving skills, teamwork skills, communication skills)
      • Practice interviewing for jobs where you have the required skills but lack industry experience
      • Practice the STAR method to map out compelling answers to skills-focused interview questions
