 entific writing using information theory. \n\nDr. Stefania Degaetano-Ortli
 eb\, Saarland University\n\nCommunication of scientific knowledge in writt
 en form has a longstanding tradition starting with the first world’s scien
 tific journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in 1665 publ
 ished by the visionary editorship of Henry Oldenburg. While the function r
 emained essentially the same\, namely to inform the scientific community o
 f the latest discoveries\, the journal has undergone significant change ov
 er time. We focus on socio-linguistic changes driven by the overarching hy
 pothesis that the linguistic development of scientific writing is characte
 rized by mechanisms of specialization and conventionalization serving to o
 ptimize efficiency in communication. To capture this optimization process 
 in our Collaborative Research Center we developed a new approach based on 
 information-theoretic measures\, which supports studying variation in lang
 uage use on a large scale. \n\nOpen to audiences in the humanities\, histo
 ry of science\, and computational linguistics.\n\n \n\n \n
