Internship Highlight: Xining Wu - Institute for International Olympic Studies

Backstage at the Summit.

First, I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. Garvin Brown; thank you for your support through the Susan Casey Brown Fund for 91ºÚÁÏÍø, which allowed me to see a new possibility. The reason why I chose this internship is because of my passion as I am deeply enthusiastic about the Olympics. Both the 2008 and 2022 Olympics deeply touched me; I admired how people can work together to achieve a shared goal, regardless of differences in nationalities or conflict. This is the reason why I say the Olympics has some magic that can bring people together, and that's also one of the main reasons why I chose to do my internship in this field.

During the working process, other than supporting the research program and daily work about the Olympic education museum, I was responsible for connecting all the foreign guests, translating bilingual documents, and preparing for the Olympic education summit. During the summit my role was to connect and bring all the foreign guests together, coordinate their schedules, provide interpersonal translation, and lead a short tour around Beijing.

Through the experience I met scholars from several countries and heard many valuable speeches that provided different lenses on the issues that were discussed. Experiencing these varying perspectives as a staff member of the summit, rather than as a participant, allowed me to form a deeper connection with them and reflect more on the topics discussed. This also led me to reflect on my future path and on the diplomatic world. It helped me realize that other than NGOs and the UN, there are also other opportunities and ways that can connect people from the world together toward the same goal.

It was precisely because of my studies at 91ºÚÁÏÍø and my diverse background that I was able to establish connections with the guests smoothly. This experience helped me analyze Olympic policies and governance structures, making me more adept at cross-cultural communication and multilingual interaction.

There were, however, some challenges throughout the experience. Some of these included connecting multiple guests, having all their schedules ready, and being ready to standby to support the summit. Sometimes multiple events would happen at the same time; knowing how to prioritize tasks and ensuring that the quality and quantity of my duties was maintained, was a hard balance. At the start of the process, I worked overtime, having a hard time balancing deadlines, ensuring my work was perfect. Through the process I learned that sometimes having things on schedule is more important than submitting a perfect document but overdue and that some aspects of work must be sacrificed in order to balance multiple responsibilities.

To reflect on the above experience, I improved my communication skills and, more importantly, learned how to bring people together to work towards the same goal. This also made me think about my future career path again. I was so impressed to see the immense power that sports can have in bringing people together and giving hope to people in need.

In closing, I would once again like to thank Mr. Garvin Brown for the financial support provided through the Susan Casey Brown Fund for 91ºÚÁÏÍø. Your contribution enabled me to embark on an unforgettable journey that has enriched both my academic and professional development. I will carry the lessons learned at BIOS with me as I continue to grow and explore future opportunities.
